Component 3, Music Video, Preliminary Print Tasks

Narrative Storyboard – Shot List

Below is the photo board we created in order to establish the shots we need to capture for the narrative element of our music video. The creation of a storyboard is commonplace within most areas of the media industry, whether it’s for a music video like our project, or a huge budget Hollywood film. Being able to visualise and creatively test potential ideas is really helpful when it comes to maximising your potential.

We need to have a sense of direction, not only in terms of how the video is going to look on a visual level but also in what sort of footage we need to capture. Creating a storyboard, like the one above, allows us to express ideas and decide on whether not certain ideas are viable when it comes to realistically producing them using the equipment we have. Unlike producers with extremely large production budgets, we are crafting a video with quite a few limitations. This is why ensuring you are aware of what you can or can’t do will reduce wastage of time and a sense of disappointment if something we want to do doesn’t work out.

Our narrative plan has a clear connection to the performance shoot we have already shot, with them both connoting themes of control, conformity and a lack of individualism. We are hoping to create a clear binary opposition of freedom and a lack of free will within the narrative. This will be achieved through the combination of the types of shots we capture and the use of mise en scene. We want there to be a clear escalation of events within our music video and for it to be able to get our audiences invested in the drive of our protagonist who is trying to escape his current situation.

In particularly, we hope to use the costuming of our talent as a direct visual signifier of conformity, and also as a cultural code which will be able to be decoded by audiences. The use of white shirts will clearly connote themes of office working and the mundanity associated with the lifestyle. We can then combine this with the use of framing and proxemics in order to clearly demonstrate the narrative journey of our protagonist becoming disenfranchised with the conforming lifestyle, which we will show through change of costuming and also a change in how he is framed with the rest of the characters. There will be a clear change in the shot distances in order to focus in on our protagonist and methods such as cut to close up will really emphasise the significance of his performance which will involve him looking visually distressed and uncomfortable.

Reflection

These uses of media language will really go a long way in ensuring our video is correctly understood and achieves the intended reading by our audience. By crafting this storyboard, me and my partner now have a clear idea of what we need to capture during our narrative shoots. The creation of the storyboard was really beneficial in terms of developing our pre-existing ideas as to what we want to do with our narrative and it helps us realise not only any other possibilities of what we could do but also any issues we could encounter.

My Tour Poster

Mood Board

Before creating my ‘ 70s disco’ tour poster, I decided to make a mood board. It features the different posters I took inspiration from through my research. The different uses of MES, including the colour palette, fonts and how the main subject is framed were all useful when it came to crafting my poster. For instance, the brown background that a few of the posters use is something I decided to use, as it gives it that retro 70s feeling. The subjecting having the colorful outline is also something I decided to use in my work.

AIDA (Attract, Interest, Desire and call to Action) is something that I need to incorporate into my poster. It refers to how a poster utilizes things such as color palette, font, imagery in order to capture the target audiences attention and make it something that they are likely to engage with.

The Tour Poster

I created this ’70s disco’ tour poster using both Photoshop and InDesign. I turned my chosen photo from a previous task into a PNG, removing the background from the subject, using the Photoshop masking tool. I then used the FX tool to add a retro rainbow color outline to the image. I then took it into a InDesign project. From there I used the skills I had learned from when I created a magazine swede to create the posters design. I decided to go for a brown background and downloaded a font called ‘Keep on Truckin’ ‘ for the main title of the Tour.

The skills I have utilized and improved upon through this exercise will without a doubt help me when it comes to producing my music magazine. The fonts, images, colour, layout, typography are all things which I have utilized to create this poster and I will be able to use them again in the future.

Self Review:

If I had the chance to change something about my poster in order to improve it, it would be to add a more interesting background. The colour works with the genre and overall aesthetic however other designs could use more complex effects and elements to elevate the poster.

The Camera Talks

To practice the use of different shots when producing media, we had a photoshoot around school. We used the different shots to convey different narratives. The different framing of shots signify different things, for example, a high angle makes the subject seem smaller and less powerful however a low shot does the opposite and creates a sense of dominance.
The types of shots used in media are apart of media language. It’s how you are conveying a message to your audience. When you combine the framing and composition of your shots with how you utilise MES it creates a narrative. For example, in the bottom middle photo, we have framed the subject as a smaller figure, we have also used a prop, the book, to show the audience that he is reading.
MES is a really important and powerful tool when it comes to creating a narrative.
I have captioned each image with three hashtags :
  • # *type of shot*
  • # *denotation*
  • # *connotation*

Looking forward, I am going to use the different techniques and types of shots when producing my magazine to encode the different narratives I want to present.

The original magazine cover

Using InDesign, I have recreated a magazine cover featuring rapper M.I.A.

I have tried to closely recreate the original NME cover as best I can using the available tools on InDesign. The star image I have available to me is slightly different to the one NME used.

This task has helped me develop skills involving desktop publishing which will be useful later when I produce a Tour Poster and with my music magazine. Skills like using the different fonts, the various types of tools such as (Fill, Stroke, Drop Shadow, Vertical/Horizontal Scale…) will effect the overall look and feel of the magazine. I need to know how to use them effectively.

Strengths

  • The image does look fairly similar to the original cover
  • I feel the fonts that I have chosen reflect the NME ones
  • I have recreated the smaller details such as the barcode, the cover lines and the masthead

Weaknesses

  • My magazines image is different to the original, with M.I.A being framed closer in the NME cover
  • The elements such as the banner, masthead and selling line are quite close and possibly to scrunched together
  • The font colour could have been better, a colour to complement the star image better

Through this I have gained skills in producing a magazine cover which, along with the theory I have been researching, will definitely help when it comes to creating my own music magazine.

Looking forward, I can further develop my skills on InDesign through watching the following videos.

My image that uses MES to communicate meaning

Made with Padlet

We decided to create a moodboard, using Padlet, about our group’s given genre, disco. This helped us understand how media producers use things such as clothing, lighting, colour palette to encode certain themes and aesthetics. This is all part of mise-en scene. We annotated the different images, analysing why each one gives a ‘ disco’ feel.

Mise-en scene is how media is set up and presented. From how a scene is lit, to the colour palette of an album cover. All of these things come together to convey meaning and a narrative.

The techniques I have learned will help me when producing my own magazine, it will let me know how to present it in order for the audience to resonate with its meaning.

After we researched our genre, Disco, we used the different techniques of MES to have a 7os disco photo shoot.

Our model, Isla, was dressed in old brown coat and brown sunglasses. This gives a distinct 70s vibe and we used a disco ball to add the disco feel.

After our photoshoot, the class used post it notes to describe each model.

The words that were used to describe our model

  • Retro
  • Party
  • Fun
  • Boogie
  • Cool

This is the final image I have chosen. This will be the one I use when I create a tour magazine. I chose this image because I feel it utilises MES the best to communicate the 70s disco feeling. The expression Caja is making is one which we noticed a lot of people making in our research. It’s one of excitement and a mixture of shock and awe. For costuming, the brown coat reflects how brown clothing was a trend in the 70s. The disco ball is also adding to the disco feeling.

Through this, I have learned how to not only analyse mise-en scene but also how to use it successfully to convey a meaning. These skills will definetly help me when it comes to creating my magazine.

Tour Poster Analysis – reading the text

I have decided to analyse and annotate this Taylor Swift Eras Tour poster in order for me to further develop my understanding of how media language is used in different media text. By deconstructing it, I can use the different methods I have learned about to assist me in crafting my magazine.

Every detail on this poster is deliberate. The media language used: the font, the colour palette, the outfits, it’s specific to the target audience of this poster and trying to push a narrative. For instance, the denotation of all the different Taylor’s. These all represent the different eras of Taylor Swift’s career. The connotation is that recently Taylor has been re releasing these albums under ‘ Taylor’s Version’  and has been reclaiming her art which Big Machine Records sold the original rights to Scooter Braun. The narrative of this art finally being reclaimed will push the audience to support Taylor and go on the tour. The use of the colour palette to signify each era was deliberate too.

I need to use Media Language when I create my magazine so that not only does it look match the theme but also that it pushes the narrative I am trying to accentuate.
